How the filament library works
Each row is one spool type you buy: brand, material, color, the price you paid and the filament weight on the spool (usually 1000 g, excluding the empty spool itself). From those two numbers the library computes the only figure the rest of the site needs — price per gram, spool price ÷ spool weight. A €20 1 kg spool works out to €0.0200/g; the table shows it to four decimals because small differences add up over long prints.
That price per gram is what the quote calculator uses when you pick a spool for a part: grams used × price per gram gives the material line of the quote. The library also feeds the filament inventory, where you can copy a saved spool as the preset for a physical spool on your shelf. On first visit the list is seeded with three generic spools (PLA, PETG, PLA Silk) so the calculators have something to work with — edit or delete them freely.
All entries are stored in this browser's local storage under your active workspace; nothing is uploaded. To move the library to another browser or keep a safe copy, use the JSON backup on the Quotes page — it bundles filaments, printer profiles, quotes and the current draft into one file you can re-import anywhere.
Price per gram assumes every gram you pay for ends up in the part. Real prints waste material — skirts, brims, purge lines, supports, failed first layers. The slicer's gram estimate already includes supports and brims, so the waste percentage in the quote calculator and the filament cost calculator covers only what the slicer cannot predict: reprints and stringing losses. Ten per cent is a realistic default for a dialled-in machine; push it higher for temperamental materials or AMS color changes, where purge is better entered as a fixed gram amount than a percentage.
There is no exchange-rate logic anywhere on the site. The currency selector (EUR, USD or GBP) only swaps the symbol used when formatting money, and the choice persists across pages. Enter spool prices in whatever currency you actually paid — a 20-unit 1 kg spool is 0.0200/g whether those units are euros or dollars. Pick one currency and stick with it: mixing purchase currencies silently skews every quote.
This library is for FDM filament. Resin is priced per litre with a failure rate on top, so bottles belong in the resin cost calculator instead of here.
