How the filament cost is calculated

Material cost is (print weight ÷ spool weight) × spool price. The slicer weight already includes supports, skirts and brims, so the extra waste percentage covers what the slicer can't predict — failed first layers, stringing, reprints. 10% is a realistic default for most prints. Purge/prime waste adds a fixed gram amount instead of a percentage, which matches how AMS color-change flush actually works. With copies above 1, the print weight is multiplied before any of this.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the weight of my print?
Your slicer reports it after slicing — PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer and Bambu Studio all show filament used in grams on the print summary. Enter that number directly; weighing a finished part also works but tells you nothing about waste.

What waste percentage should I use?
Remember the slicer weight already includes supports, skirts and brims — the waste % here is extra on top of that, for failed first layers, stringing losses and the odd reprint. 10% is a realistic default; lower it for reliable setups and simple single-wall parts. For AMS/multicolor prints with a known flush volume, the purge grams field is more accurate than a percentage.

Is cost per gram just the spool price divided by 1000?
For a 1 kg spool, yes — price per gram is spool price ÷ spool weight, shown in the breakdown. A spool costing 20 at 1000 g works out to 0.020 per gram, whatever your currency.

How should I account for failed prints?
Divide by the success rate, don’t add a flat markup: at a 20% failure rate each good print costs 1 ÷ 0.8 = 1.25× the material, not 1.20×. Some tools apply failure as a simple markup and understate the cost. The price your prints calculator uses the correct ÷(1 − failure) math for material, machine time and labor.

Does this include electricity and machine wear?
