How the conversion works

Filament volume is weight ÷ density, and length is volume divided by the strand's cross-section π × (diameter ÷ 2)². Editing either the weight or the length field recomputes the other. Densities used (g/cm³): PLA 1.24, PETG 1.27, ABS 1.04, ASA 1.07, TPU 1.21, Nylon 1.14, PC 1.20. Frequently asked questions

How many meters are on a 1 kg spool of PLA?
About 335 m of 1.75 mm PLA — the tool computes this from PLA’s density of 1.24 g/cm³. ABS is less dense (1.04 g/cm³), so a 1 kg ABS spool holds roughly 400 m.

How much does 5 meters of filament weigh?
For 1.75 mm PLA, about 15 g: cross-section 2.41 mm² × 5000 mm × 1.24 g/cm³ ≈ 14.9 g. Type 5 in the length field and the weight updates instantly.

Does the material really matter for the conversion?
Yes — length comes from weight ÷ density, and densities differ: PLA 1.24, PETG 1.27, ABS 1.04, ASA 1.07, TPU 1.21, Nylon 1.14, PC 1.20 g/cm³. Picking ABS instead of PLA changes the result by about 19%.

Is 2.85 mm the same as "3 mm" filament?
Yes — "3 mm" filament is nominally 2.85 mm, and the converter uses 2.85 mm for the cross-section. One meter of 2.85 mm PLA weighs about 7.9 g.

Why does this converter disagree with some big-name calculators?
Density assumptions. We use the accepted datasheet values — TPU 95A at 1.21 g/cm³ and PLA at 1.24 g/cm³ — while some well-known calculators use 1.30 for PLA and 1.27 for TPU. That alone shifts the meters-per-kg result by roughly 2–7%, so the same spool looks longer or shorter depending on which density the tool assumes.
