Safety: spools deform before some filaments dry
Many plastic spools soften below the drying temperature of engineering filaments — Bambu Lab's own ABS spools, for example, are rated to roughly 70 °C, well under the 80 °C+ that ABS, Nylon and PC need. Either transfer the filament to a metal or glass tray, or dry at a lower temperature for a longer time. Cardboard spools tolerate heat but scorch near 100 °C.

The table is the consensus of dryer and filament manufacturers — PrintDry, Polymaker and Bambu Lab datasheets all land in these ranges. Wet filament shows as popping, stringing, fuzzy surfaces and weak layer bonds; when in doubt, dry longer rather than hotter. Frequently asked questions
Can I dry filament in a kitchen oven?
It works, but household ovens commonly swing ±10 °C around the set point — risky near PLA’s 40–50 °C range and often unable to hold PC’s 95–100 °C. A filament dryer or food dehydrator with a real thermostat is the safer option.
How do I know if my filament is wet?
Popping or hissing from the nozzle, heavy stringing, fuzzy or rough surfaces and weak layer bonds are the classic signs. Nylon and PETG absorb moisture the fastest; when in doubt, dry.
How long should I dry PLA vs Nylon?
PLA needs 4–6 hours at 40–50 °C. Nylon is far more hygroscopic: 8–12 hours at 80–90 °C, ideally immediately before printing. The chart above lists the consensus ranges for all eleven materials.
Why are your PC and Nylon temperatures higher than other calculators?
Our ranges (PC 95–100 °C, Nylon 80–90 °C) follow Bambu Lab and Polymaker datasheets. Some popular calculators list 70–80 °C for PC, which barely dries it — PC needs near-boiling heat to drive moisture out. If your dryer cannot hold 95 °C+, dry longer at its maximum and store the spool in a sealed dry box.
